Meet Buck English, one of Lake County, California’s most notorious outlaws from the late 19th century
Born Lawrence Buchanen English in Oregon, Buck was thrust into a fierce family feud that claimed the lives of three of his brothers. By thirteen, he was driven by a need for revenge, setting him on a path of crime. At just 22, he boldly held up the Lower Lake stagecoach, marking the start of his infamous career.
Unlike the elusive Black Bart, Buck’s brash and confident nature made him a notorious figure in the Old West.
For two decades, Buck roamed the countryside near Middletown, openly flaunting his identity and criminal activities. Armed with a six-shooter, he was always ready for a showdown. From robbing Wells Fargo strongboxes to dueling in the streets, Buck’s daring knew no bounds. Despite multiple stints in San Quentin, he always returned to more heists, like the infamous hold-up near Mount Saint Helena.
Though not as famous as some contemporaries, Buck struck fear wherever he went until his capture in 1895 where he served another prison term.
Despite a long career as a professional deviant, he lived out his days quietly, passing away of natural causes in San Francisco in 1915.
Buck English is portrayed as the outlaw he is by Korey Gonzales (@captain4k2g) and you can catch him at our next western themed event!
